There's no such thing as a stupid question - or is there?

There's no such thing as a stupid question - or is there?

Carl Sagan said 'There are naive questions, tedious questions, ill-phrased questions, questions put after inadequate self-criticism. But every question is a cry to understand the world. There is no such thing as a dumb question'.

And that's been phrased in many different ways, e.g.

'There is no such thing as a stupid question if it's sincere. Better to ask and risk appearing stupid than to continue on your ignorant way and make a stupid mistake'.

I've always agreed and encouraged stupid questions, BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE!

Here's what they wrote me (writer's name withheld):

Dear Bruce, thanks for all the help so far. As you recommended, I now always ask for prospect's cell phone numbers and it's helped a lot. So, what's the worst time to call them?

I was gobsmacked at that questions but could not resist replying, and I knew they would take it with good humour. Here's what I replied:

What's the worst time to call them? Probably around 2.30 am on a Sunday morning.

And they did take it with good humour.

Do you have a question? No matter how silly you think it might be, ASK US.
